Bluejays

While waiting for the bus to go run some errands, a bluejay happily buried an acorn in the ground behind the bench I was sitting at. It was quite engaging to watch it. First the bluejay hopped a few paces, surveyed the ground, and finally in one fell swoop speared the acorn into the soil. Tap, tap, tap with the beak, and the acorn was securely underground. As the finishing touch, Mr. Bluejay (or perhaps Ms.) delicately placed a few other pebbles on top of the spot.

It would have been fun to catch the action on camera, but my little point and shoot would probably not have been able to easily separate the bluejay from the highly textured background.

So instead, I went on the internet in search of the bluejay.

What's interesting is that the photos I saw didn't match our local bluejays:

Our bluejays here are a lot lankier, have a lot more solid blue, and simply look less fluffy, for lack of a better word. There's not so much of the frill and trill of white specks on the feathers.

Even more interesting were the various other things I found that were also named bluejay.

Of course, the Toronto Blue Jays. Not that I know anything about sports.

Um, yeah... A super hero, presumably. Named Blue Jay.

Allegedly for the previously mentioned Blue Jay team.

And let's not forget Nike's merchandise.

The so-called Nike Air Force One Low Bluejay White Varsity Red. Imagine saying that to your mom. ("Mom, I want the Nike Air Force One Low Bluejay White Varsity Red, not the Nike Air Force One Low CB34 - Charles Barkley Series White Black Pine Green!") Of course, that is possibly what the website called it, and not the official name. Still.

They don't look too bad, although I would have preferred there to be no red, instead of the awkwardly placed splotch at the heel.

Well, that's all for now folks. Wish I had a better camera... :D
